God is Sovereign and Prayer Can Change Things, a Paradox

▪︎ David built an altar to stay the plague of God because he numbered the people – 2Sam 24: 24, 25;
▪︎ Hezekiah, King of Judah, hears of the imminent attack from Assyria (Isa 36:13-14).
   ► Knowing they have conquered everyone in their path (Isa 36:18),
   ► Hezekiah prays for divine help from the God of Israel (Isa 37:4).
   ► God not only answers his prayer but delivers Jerusalem with His mighty hand of power (Isa 37:7)
▪︎ Hezekiah Prays – Isa 37:21, 22 – “because” – (אֲשֶׁר – Hebrew)  particle of relation, showing there is a direct connection between prayer and God’s sovereign action.
   ► God uses Hezekiah’s prayer to take action – He sends a message to Assyria…
   ► God planned and executed all of Assyria’s previous successes – Isa 37:26
   ► Raging against Zion is raging against God – Isa 37:28;
   ► God says… I, the Lord, will stop you right here, right now! – Isa 37:29;
▪︎ Assyria left the way they came – Isa 37:34;
▪︎ They never bothered Israel again – Isa 37:33;
▪︎ God Himself defended Israel – Isa 37:35;
▪︎ Many Assyrians died – Isa 37:36-37, 38;
