John 7:1-53 – Confusion About Jesus The Christ – Answers

1After these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him. 2Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near. 3Therefore His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. 4“For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5For not even His brothers were believing in Him. 6So Jesus said to them, “My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune. 7“The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil. 8“Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.” 9Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.

10But when His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as if, in secret. 11So the Jews were seeking Him at the feast and were saying, “Where is He?” 12There was much grumbling among the crowds concerning Him; some were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He leads the people astray.” 13Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear of the Jews.

14But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach. 15The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this man become learned, having never been educated?” 16So Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me. 17“If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself. 18“He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

19“Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?” 20The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?” 21Jesus answered them, “I did one deed, and you all marvel [astonished]22“For this reason Moses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man. 23“If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath? 24“Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

25So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is this not the man whom they are seeking to kill? 26“Look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. The rulers do not really know that this is the Christ, do they? 27“However, we know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ may come, no one knows where He is from.” 28Then Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know Me and know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. 29“I know Him, because I am from Him, and He sent Me.” 30So they were seeking to seize Him; and no man laid his hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. 31But many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, “When the Christ comes, He will not perform more signs than those which this man has, will He?”

32The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering [grumbling] these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to seize Him. 33Therefore Jesus said, “For a little while longer I am with you, then I go to Him who sent Me. 34“You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” 35The Jews then said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He is not intending to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, is He? 36“What is this statement that He said, ‘You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?”

37Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. 38“He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” 39But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

40Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, “This certainly is the Prophet.” 41Others were saying, “This is the Christ.” Still others were saying, “Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He? 42“Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43So a division occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

45The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46The officers answered, “Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks.” 47The Pharisees then answered them, “You have not also been led astray, have you? 48“No one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 49“But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed.” 50Nicodemus (he who came to Him before, being one of them) said to them, 51“Our Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?” 52They answered him, “You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.” 53Everyone went to his home.

  1. How would you describe the progression of talk about Jesus… (e.g. discussions, grumblings) in the family, crowds, and with the Jews?
▪︎ His brothers were offered half-hearted support to advance their own perspectives and desires (see next question).
▪︎ The Jews were pressing to seize Him, but He was on to them, staying just out of reach (John 7:11).
▪︎ Several in the crowd were beginning to believe, but Jesus knew the world hated Him (John 7:7).
▪︎ Similar to today, some saw Him as a good man but were corrected by others saying He was either evil or crazy (John 7:12, 20).
▪︎ Everyone was silenced by their fear of the Jews (John 7:13).
▪︎ All were astonished at His teaching (John 7:15). They had no concept of Spiritual things, God intervening in the physical (John 3:4, 9-10).
▪︎ The crowrd was starting to see the confusion caused by the leadership (John 7:25-26).

  2. What was the status of His brothers faith in this section?
▪︎ His brothers seemed to believe in Him as much as the rest of the crowds (for food, physical matters) but not spiritually.
▪︎ Scripture speaks very clearly at this point, they did not believe (John 7:5).
▪︎ They wanted Jesus to display His works publicly and move on with His kingdom rule.
▪︎ Jesus was not about to short circuit God’s timing (John 7:6).
    ▪︎ This may be Satan renewing his temptations from Luke 4:13;

  3. Compare Jesus’ timeline to everyone else’s. Why was that important?
▪︎ He was following God agenda that put Him in Jerusalem at Passover to be the Lamb that takes away the sins of the world.
▪︎ The crowds wanted a King to take back the nation from Rome (John 6:15), but that would not happen until the End, some 2030+ years into the future.
▪︎ Satan didn’t care whether he made Jesus early or late, as long as he messed up the timing. He wanted Jesus to take the Kingdom early, or miss the cross altogether, he did not care which.
▪︎ Based on Scripture and prophesy it had to be the right passover, not off by a year. It was God’s timetable, God’s plan.
▪︎ Jesus foresaw the pain of separation and death and so, wasn’t excited about it but was willing to flex to God’s timing. “Nevertheless, not my will but thine be done” (Matt 26:42; Mark 14:36).
▪︎ Why is this important?… Because the future of the world, the fate of the whole human race depends on it. The entire universe revolves around the Lord Jesus Christ; He is the preeminent one (Col 1:16, 17, 18-19;)

  4. What was unique about Jesus’ teaching?
▪︎ It was the teaching of God.. He was sent by God to them (John 7:28-29),
▪︎ He does what He sees the Father doing (John 5:19),
▪︎ God testifies about Jesus, the Messiah (John 5:36),
▪︎ Jesus speaks God’s words that give life (John 5:24, 25; John 6:35)
    ▪︎ Jesus spoke God’s truth exactly (John 8:38, 40; John 12:49)

  5. In John 7:24 Jesus’ command was really asking those present to do what? How is this demonstrated from their discussion in the verses that follow?
▪︎ He wanted them to think logically for themselves.
▪︎ He did not want their reasoning to be biased or influenced in any way by the traditions of men or by the manipulations of Satan.
► The crowds were confused to begin with by the complexities and were not helped at all by the leadership, who were lost as well (John 7:25-26).
► They were starting from scratch, with no Spiritual relationship, no guidance (John 7:27, 28-29)
► They needed to be born again from above…they needed the gift of faith from God (John 3:3; Eph 2:8-9)

  6. Jesus’ statements in John 7:37-38 and related context and cross references are truly astonishing. What was the response? Why weren’t the crowds taking advantage of this offer?
▪︎ From a human perspective, they needed guidance from someone.
▪︎ Looking forward to what we know is coming, they needed the Holy Spirit to call them, regenerate them.
▪︎ It is telling that the Jews didn’t understand what Jesus meant in John 7:34 and didn’t seen that He was saying they would not make it to heaven with their current approach (John 7:35).
▪︎ Some actually were starting to believe, (John 7:40-41)

  7. How does the last paragraph typify the response to Jesus in this chapter?
▪︎ Total confusion between the Pharisees and others trying to understand what was happening.
▪︎ Thd guards appear to be closest to the correct analysis, pure amazement.
▪︎ The entire leadership group, with the exception of possibly Nichodemus, were blinded to the truth of Scripture, to the point they couldn’t even reseach properly.
▪︎ The people could not correlate the the reality they saw with their own eyes to the reaction they were getting from the leadership.
▪︎ There are three possible explanations… either the Pharisees were crazy, or they had demons, or they were driven by evil motives (greed, sordid gain, pride, lust, etc.)… Unfortunately, it is impossible to determine which was the largest contributor; possibly all three.
    ▪︎ Fortunately, for mankind and the world to come, this was all part of God’s bigger plan, Isa 53:4, 5, 6;
