Appalled at Sin? Grace to Escape

▪︎ Appalled at sinful acts – Ezra 9:3, 4;
▪︎ You can escape – Ezra 9:8;

  ► He brings reviving to a few, remnant
  ► He gives a peg in His Holy place
  ► A foothold, permanent stake, anchor
  ► God enlightens our eyes
  ► He gives a little reviving
  ► In our bondage [not from bondage]
▪︎ Extended lovingkindness – Ezra 9:9
  ► Slaves in bondage
  ► God has not forsaken us
  ► He extended lovingkindness to us…
  ► He gives us reviving…
  ► To raise up the house of our God
  ► To restore the ruins
  ► To give a wall of protection
   (full text – Ezra_9:3-15
      3When I heard about this matter, I tore my garment and my robe, and pulled some of the hair from my head and my beard, and sat down appalled. 4Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel on account of the unfaithfulness of the exiles gathered to me, and I sat appalled until the evening offering.
      5But at the evening offering I arose from my humiliation, even with my garment and my robe torn, and I fell on my knees and stretched out my hands to the LORD my God;6and I said, “O my God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift up my face to You, my God, for our iniquities have risen above our heads and our guilt has grown even to the heavens. 7“Since the days of our fathers to this day we have been in great guilt, and on account of our iniquities we, our kings and our priests have been given into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity and to plunder and to open shame, as it is this day. 8“But now for a brief moment grace has been shown from the LORD our God, to leave us an escaped remnant and to give us a peg in His holy place, that our God may enlighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving in our bondage. 9“For we are slaves; yet in our bondage our God has not forsaken us, but has extended lovingkindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us reviving to raise up the house of our God, to restore its ruins and to give us a wall in Judah and Jerusalem.
      10“Now, our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken Your commandments, 11which You have commanded by Your servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land which you are entering to possess is an unclean land with the uncleanness of the peoples of the lands, with their abominations which have filled it from end to end and with their impurity. 12‘So now do not give your daughters to their sons nor take their daughters to your sons, and never seek their peace or their prosperity, that you may be strong and eat the good things of the land and leave it as an inheritance to your sons forever.’ 13“After all that has come upon us for our evil deeds and our great guilt, since You our God have requited us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us an escaped remnant as this, 14shall we again break Your commandments and intermarry with the peoples who commit these abominations? Would You not be angry with us to the point of destruction, until there is no remnant nor any who escape? 15“O LORD God of Israel, You are righteous, for we have been left an escaped remnant, as it is this day; behold, we are before You in our guilt, for no one can stand before You because of this.”

▪︎ Compare Ezra’s humble attitude (above) to Israel’s original approach, attempting to return to Egypt and their original bondage… (see also – Neh_9:16-17
      16“But they, our fathers, acted arrogantly;
            They became stubborn and would not listen to Your commandments.
      17“They refused to listen,
            And did not remember Your wondrous deeds which You had performed among them;
            So they became stubborn and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt.
            But You are a God of forgiveness,
            Gracious and compassionate,
            Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness;
            And You did not forsake them.
      18“Even when they made for themselves
            A calf of molten metal
            And said, ‘This is your God
            Who brought you up from Egypt,’
            And committed great blasphemies,
      19You, in Your great compassion,
            Did not forsake them in the wilderness;
            The pillar of cloud did not leave them by day,
            To guide them on their way,
            Nor the pillar of fire by night, to light for them the way in which they were to go.
      20“You gave Your good Spirit to instruct them,
            Your manna You did not withhold from their mouth,
            And You gave them water for their thirst.
      21“Indeed, forty years You provided for them in the wilderness and they were not in want;
            Their clothes did not wear out, nor did their feet swell.

      1For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; 2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3and all ate the same spiritual food; 4and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ. 5Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness.
      6Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved. 7Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, “THE PEOPLE SAT DOWN TO EAT AND DRINK, AND STOOD UP TO PLAY.” 8Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day. 9Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents. 10Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. 13No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

▪︎ This is yet another example of how the whole family of God is joined together, through time, by the Holy Spirit, to bring glory to God the Father – Heb 11:39-40; 1Cor 12:11-12, 13;
