Promise, Faith, Hope… All part of the Plan

▪︎ God promised hope from ages ago –
  ► Counselor, Mighty God – Isa 9:6, 7;    (full text – Isa_9:6-7
      6For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
            And the government will rest on His shoulders;
            And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
            Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
      7There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
            On the throne of David and over his kingdom,
            To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness
            From then on and forevermore.
            The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.
)
  ► Shoot of David – Isa 11:1, 2, 5;    (full text – Isa_11:1-5
      1Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse,
            And a branch from his roots will bear fruit.
      2The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him,
            The spirit of wisdom and understanding,
            The spirit of counsel and strength,
            The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
      3And He will delight in the fear of the LORD,
            And He will not judge by what His eyes see,
            Nor make a decision by what His ears hear;
      4But with righteousness He will judge the poor,
            And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth;
            And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth,
            And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked.
      5Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins,
            And faithfulness the belt about His waist.

  ► The Branch – Jer 23:5, 33:15;
  ► Our King – Zech 9:9, 10, 11, 12;    (full text – Zech_9:9-12
      9Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
            Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem!
            Behold, your king is coming to you;
            He is just and endowed with salvation,
            Humble, and mounted on a donkey,
            Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
      10I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
            And the horse from Jerusalem;
            And the bow of war will be cut off.
            And He will speak peace to the nations;
            And His dominion will be from sea to sea,
            And from the River to the ends of the earth.
      11As for you also, because of the blood of My covenant with you,
            I have set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.
      12Return to the stronghold, O prisoners who have the hope;
            This very day I am declaring that I will restore double to you.

▪︎ God promised hope to those with faith and patience – Heb 6:12-13, 14-15;
▪︎ Promises backed by His Sovereignty – Heb 6:16-17, 18, 19
    (full text – Heb_6:9-20
      9But, beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way. 10For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints. 11And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, 12so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
      13For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14saying, “I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU.” 15And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise. 16For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. 17In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath18so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. 19This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

▪︎ God’s oath (His promise) is defined by (is based on) two unchangeable things – Heb 6:18:
    • God’s word – 2Sam7:21; Isa 40:7-8; 55:11; Ps 19:7;
    • God’s character, as displayed in His heart – 2Sam7:21
▪︎ Its impossible for God to lie- Titus 1:2;
▪︎ Jews and Gentiles are fellow members of the body and fellow heirs of the promise of God made to Abraham – Eph 3:6;
