Colossians 2:8-15 – Focus on Being In Christ – Answers

      8See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. 9For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, 10and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority; 11and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; 12having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.

1. Why was Paul so eager to give a warning right up front (Col 2:8)?

▪︎ It is important for all humanity to follow Christ and not be sidetracked.
▪︎ Its critical enough to be started immediately, no time to waste, not even to finish reading the sentence.
▪︎ The fact that people are being taken captive (taken as spoil in a battle) implies an irreversible state if completed. Thankfully, God is not finished with them even if they succumb to a false tracher or two (heaven forbid)… Eph 4:14.
▪︎ False teaching is empty, has no value, total vainity (Eph 5:6)
▪︎ It is deception, crafted by the devil himself (John 8:44; Rev 12:10;).
▪︎ Traditions of men are of no value in God’s economy and habit forming (Rom 16:18).

▪︎ Each member contributing to the overall result (Eph 4:11-12), and the word of God (Heb 4:12).
▪︎ Spiritual reproduction – Matt 28:19-20, 2Tim 2:2;

4. What is the role of baptism?

▪︎ It is a picture of the process we just went through in accepting Christ as Savior… His death paid our debt of sin, our old man of the flesh died with Him on the cross, and we are transformed by the resurrected Christ indwelling in the Holy Spirit from that moment on.
▪︎ It shows our commitment to Christ, that we are willing to stand up for Him (publicly) in front of friends and neighbors expounding on how Christ has changed our lives.
▪︎ It clarifies for us the process of sanctification that we all must go through (Heb 12:14)… pursuing holiness from Christ’s work in me.
